About Dr. Theresa Nelson
I am an Early Career Researcher with two roles: a Transport and Energy Project Officer at the Institute for Transport Studies, University of Leeds, and a Research Assistant and Developer for the University of Sheffield and Creswell Heritage Trust.I completed my PhD in Archaeology at the University of Sheffield in 2022 via the Grantham Centre for Sustainable Futures, where my thesis, Modelling Agricultural Energy at Neolithic Çatalhöyük, explored the energy dynamics associated with early agriculture. My research integrated a diverse array of data—archaeological, ethnographic , agricultural , and food science—alongside a UN FAO modern energy framework to create an energetic model of Neolithic Catalhoyuk’s agricultural system. My research background is deeply rooted in energy and sustainability and my academic journey has been complimented by a blend of hands-on fieldwork, research, and public engagement. My skills include advanced knowledge of archaeological methodologies, particularly in sustainability-focused research, and a strong proficiency in data analysis. I am passionate about connecting the dots between history, sustainability, and public engagement, and I always aim to make a meaningful impact in academic and applied settings. I am experienced in content creation and communication, having managed social media and blog content for research projects, and have led and organised numerous public engagement events.
Listed skills include Museums, Archaeology, Political Campaigns, Excavation, and 4 others.

Transport And Energy Project Officer For The Institute For Transport Studies
I am providing proffessional support to Professor Jillian Anable and a wider team of researchers across multiple projects: CREDS (Centre for Research on Energy Demand Solutions, UKERC (UK Energy Research Centre), ELEVATE (Innovative Light ELEctric Vehicles for Active and Digital TravEl), TRANSAS (COVID-19 Transport, Travel and Social Adaptation Study, and CARS (Connecting Administration Vehicle Data for Research on Sustainable Transport). My role involves communicating research findings to a wide range of stakeholders, collaborating with academics to deisgn and deliver online/in-person engagement events, mangaging project budgets and milestone, preparing progress reports related to impact and EDI, and providing administrative and logistical support to the projects. For ELEVATE, I help with social media platforms and deliver online engagement.
Research Assistant And Research Developer
I am serving the role of Research Assistant for the project run by Dr. Kevin Kuykendall: Public perceptions about archaeology and heritage: co-production at Creswell Crags. This project focuses on exploring public perspectives on archaeology and the archaeological site of Creswell Crags, given the loss of funding and support of archaeology and other humanities disciplines throughout the United Kingdom, and the challenges that the site of Creswell Crags has experienced since 2020 (e.g., the Covid pandemic and the cost of living crisis). This project tests a model of community-engaged archaeological fieldwork to understand how to mobilise public perceptions of the role of archaeology for long-term strategic audience development and programming at Creswell Crags. My role in the project includes leading and implementing the knowledge exchange, co-production, and public engagement components of the project. This includes working with Creswell staff to recruit a public focus group for participatory excavations who will gain hands-on experience and training in archaeological fieldwork.
Brilliant Club Tutor
This programme trains PhD researchers to design and deliver a university-level course to pupils from low-participation schools to help pupils develop the confidence and proficiency to secure a place in a university. The first-year undergraduate level course I developed for my students focused on assessing the "Neolithic Revolution". I developed my own course materials, including presentations, detailed course booklets, practical activities, lesson plans, and essay and homework assignments. Activity design was geared toward promoting higher-level learning abilities, evaluation, analysis, and synthesis of ideas, the topic of which surrounded what archaeology is as a discipline of science and the humanities. Students also critically analyse archaeological methods and data and compare and contrast different lifeways whilst learning about agriculture in the past. Their final essay assignment asks them to scrutinise the changes that occurred with the adoption of agriculture using archaeological evidence and interpretations to support their claims. I provide ongoing support for learning as they work through drafts of their essays whilst regularly delivering formative feedback on which to improve. Overall, my course seeks to help students challenge existing ideas about our distant past, especially the opinion that there is little to learn from our past and that past people had little to no impact on our lives today.
Heritage Facilitator
I was a part time heritage facilitator under direct management of the Learning Officers and Education Team to help develop and deliver the learning programme. I helped to deliver engaging and inspiring formal and informal learning sessions for Creswell Heritage Trust, and the occasional facilitation of special events, including: public & private tours, school group visits, birthday parties, Life on the Edge activity days, costumed interpretation sessions, and outreach sessions.
Sustainability Consultation Coordinator
This was a paid position working on the questionnaire consultation aspect of the University of Sheffield's sustainability strategy. To ensure a consistent level of data across the different SDG’s, I helped coordinate the questionnaire writing.
Sustainability Lead Scholar
I was the Leading Scholar for the Sustainability Strategy Audit for The University of Sheffield, which informed the University’s first Sustainability Strategy. We identified metrics and areas of focus relevant to the university using the UN Sustainability Development Goal Global Indicator Framework. Our report provides a broad picture of where the University is successful and where it can do more, and serves as roadmap for more targeted exploration of the University’s sustainability policies and practices.
Outreach Coordinator
My public outreach work with the University of Sheffield Department of Archaeology's student-run outreach programme, Archaeology in the City, allowed for me to collaborate with other researchers, promote departmental research activities, and identify and obtaining external funding. In 2018 I organised, advertised and acquired funding for our annual event, The Woodland Heritage Festival. This festival held over 700 attendees from the public and was fully funded by the Grantham Centre for Sustainable Futures Fellowship and the Arts and Humanities Post-Graduate Research Funding. This festival successfully combined aspects of heritage, archaeology, science, and sustainability for members of the public whilst displaying a range of departmental activities. We held a host of interdisciplinary, interactive activities, including a historical hospital, The Energy of an Iron Smelt, poetry workshop, Q-pit tour, a Neolithic village, immersive theatrical performances, children's activities, woodcrafters, and museum demonstrations and displays from Sheffield Museums and Doncaster Museum. Furthermore, the event was advertised on public radio, in newspapers, across all social media platforms, throughout departmental newsletters and distributed fliers in local coffee shops and cafes. A filmmaker also documented the festival, and the resulting short film is widely accessible on the department's Twitter page and the Archaeology in the City Facebook page. The heritage festival successfully demonstrated the talents and creativity of students, staff, heritage practitioners, and craftspeople from Sheffield and surrounding areas
