Along with Mel Jones, I founded Sterling Planet in 2000. I have long held a personal and professional commitment to sustainability in the triple bottom line: environmental, social and economic. Before beginning Sterling Planet, I worked in an array of positions (treasurer; CFO; COO) at Southern Company for 30 years. Southern Company is an Atlanta-based conventional electric utility companty that ranks amonth the world's largest. While there, I pioneered Southern's expansion into unregulated independent power production and diversified energy-related markets. While at SC and later with my own startup company, I developed, owned and/or operated a total of eight electricity generators powered by the sun and other forms of renewable energy.My true ambition is to help those in need in a sustainable way, and I utilize my position at Sterling Planet to help provide opportunities and improve the lives of others. Currently Sterling Planet supports 3 non-profit programs that help to grow and sustain education, health and business around the world. Those programs are: Girl Talk (www.desiretoinspire.com); Solar Light for Africa (www.solarlightforafrica.org); and Sierra Leone International Mission School. I currently serve on the Board of Directors for Girl Talk and my wife, Martha, serves on their People of Influence, People of Inspiration committee. Girl Talk promotes mentorship and leadership in middle and high school aged girls.SLA - Solar Light for Africa - I also serve on the Board of Directors for SLA, which provides solar panels to rural, sub-Saharan African towns. The focus is on providing lighting for schools and clinics.SLIMS - Sierra Leone International Mission School - I work with the leadership of SLIMS to help develop their schools, and am especially excited to begin the project to provide a computer lab and connectivity with American classrooms.
