About Amanda Tongen
I am an analytical chemist with great experience in chromatography and thermal analysis. I have a Master's in Chemistry with over 10 years of industry experience. My background is in polymer and analytical chemistry. I enjoy new challenges and non-routine work, as well as project management and multi-tasking! My most recent position focused on VOC emissions testing for the furniture and automotive industries. Outside of work, I am learning German, re-learning Spanish, and learning to play guitar (and piano, and bass!). I am a volunteer at my local cat rescue. I love traveling with my spouse. Our hobbies include biking, swimming, camping, and backpacking. Previous Experiences:While employed at The Dow Chemical Company, I gained experience in pyrolysis, evolved gas analysis, and mass spectral analysis. I am knowledgeable in sample preparation, method development and validation, and instrument maintenance. I was involved with several large-scale projects and am experienced with organizing and maintaining hundreds of samples for multiple analysts. I installed a Varian 4-Channel MicroGC and developed and validated methods. I have working knowledge of Atlas, ChemStation, EzChrom, Maestro, ChromaTOF, Mass Hunter, and Universal Analysis software. I had extensive experience with running and maintaining an HPLC, DSC, and DMA in my Masters program. My graduate coursework involved a focus on analytical chemistry, biochemistry, and polymer chemistry. My thesis work involved synthesizing di-esters, blending them in PVC at various concentrations, and analyzing the PVC-plasticizer interactions via FTIR, DSC, and DMA.

Chemist Iii
Developing a deeper involvement with the testing and test standards community. Specializing in furniture testing such as BIFMA m7.1 and custom testing for the furniture, building products, and automotive industries. Training new chemists in technical work and project management. Mentoring several new chemists. Maintaining great relationships with our clients. Working on another lab expansion. Starting an employee engagement committee to recognize, celebrate, and encourage coworkers. Leader for the furniture, chemical, and building product committees. Serving as a point of contact for large furniture clients, partner labs, and custom requests. Creating test plans, assigning incoming work for the department, and reviewing coworkers' projects.
Chemist Ii
I traveled to other Intertek locations to train coworkers on GC/MS maintenance and SOPs. I visited our agricultural lab in New Orleans to repair and train on a GC/MS. I visited our San Antonio VOC lab to train coworkers on GC/MS and VOC procedures. I visited an automotive OEM in the summer of 2020 to perform on-site air sampling. The test sample was later delivered to my laboratory, and I continued to lead the several month-long project, including evening conference calls.
Chemist I
I am a chemist in the VOC laboratory for Transportation Technologies. My department focuses on not only automotive emissions testing, but also on emissions testing for furniture and building and construction products. Typical samples can range from pieces of automotive trim to lounge chairs to spray foam insulation. With my thermal background, we were able to add pyrolysis GC/MS to our offerings. This allows us to perform in depth polymer analysis and additive analysis. I have cross-trained in failure analysis, which fits well with my deformulation background. I have yet to develop a love of microscopy, which I think is important for FA work. This position allows me an in-depth knowledge of testing specifications. While a lot of our testing is to certain specifications, we also offer custom testing to meet our client's needs. I get to develop test plans to help meet those needs. So far this position has allowed me to learn air chambers and related thermal desorption techniques, XRF, and Shimadzu LabSolutions. I enjoy working in a fast-paced lab with a commitment to customer service. I am excited not knowing what the next sample or custom test is going to be.
Technician
Technician in the VOC laboratory. Sample preparation, introduction to VOC test specifications. instrument operation and calibration. Sample preparation is anything from cutting up small pieces of automotive dashboards, to applying plaster to substrates, to assemling a full piece of furniture! It keeps it exciting.
Baker
I was employed as a baker at GR Bagel. I managed production and product inventory with another baker. I produced bagels, scones, cookies, biscotti, brownies, cupcakes, and cream cheese. I worked the griddle and made breakfast sandwiches to order. I worked the front of the house, taking orders and serving customers with fresh bagels and cream cheese.I helped the owners launch the retail space on December 17, 2014. I enjoyed the challenge of helping to prepare and open a storefront. I enjoyed the different perspective of a small business and developed a great sense of teamwork. It was exciting to see the business grow.
Temporary Scientist
I was employed as a temporary analytical R&D chemist working within a QC lab. I focused mostly on method development and validations with UPLC analyses. I learned Waters Empower software and worked with Waters Acquity UPLC H-Class Systems. I developed a basic understanding of pharmaceuticals and GMP.
Analytical Technologist
Technologist in the Formulated Systems Analysis group of Analytical Sciences Core R&D. Specializing in deformulation with pyrolysis techniques, including TGA-GC-MS, evolved gas analysis (EGA-GC-MS), and pyrolysis micro-GC.
