Massachusetts Horticultural Society was founded in 1829 to encourage the science and practice of horticulture, and to develop the public's enjoyment, appreciation, and understanding of plants and the environment. Located on the 36-acre Elm Bank site “The Cheney Estate” is an exciting landscape surrounded on three sides by the Charles River and comprised of significant historical landscapes, buildings and contemporary gardens for education and enjoyment and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.The Gardens at Elm Bank include 8 Mass Hort and 4 "plant society" gardens that focus on how plants and design are an integral part of everyday life for people of all ages and backgrounds. Garden designs connect people’s lifestyles to plants and the local, regional and global environment through sustainable design, interpretation, and cultural practices.
