As a field worker at Teia I conduct ecological serveys throughout the North of the Netherlands. The serveys mostly focus of species that inhabit man made structures, such as bats and the common swift.

A temporary job meant to fill time between graduation and my world trip. In this job I was tasked to call people with a positive corona result. During the conversation I was tasked with explaining what was expected of the person to limit the spread as well as determine possible situations in which the person could have infected others. Data collected from the call was then registered in an online database. This database could be used by local GGD networks to determine where active measures were needed to limit the spread of Covid-19.

Bissau, Guinee-Bissau

For my second master project I travelled to the country of Guinea Bissau to perform semi-structured interviews with local fishers, that were active within the Bijagos-Archipelago. I analysed and reported on the data to assess past population trends of fish and elasmobranchs within the Bijagos. The data was used to aid local conservation efforts for elasmobranch species, as well as to provide suggestions for the improvement of sustainable fishing practices within the area.

For this master research project I evaluate multiple sites in the Wadden Sea for possible future seagrass restoration projects. This is to be done by seeding two species of seagrass (Z. marina an Z. noltii) on potentially suitable locations. Survival and growth is to be evaluated at the end of the growing season to determine site suitably.

While working as cook at La Cubanita I made various tapas for our guests to eat. I worked in a dynamic environment to give our guests the best tapas which they expected of our brand.

I prepared and served various tapas in an open kitchen, meaning the guests were able to see the preparations I made for their dinner. This enhanced the experience meaning I worked with the guests, while they saw my work.

During this internship I worked at the Marine Discovery Center on the island of Landaa Giravaaru (Maldives). I had many responsibilities like providing daily care for injured sea turtles and restoring coral around the island. Because the MDC is located on a Four Seasons Resort I got to interact with guests a lot. I helped them along on cruises and dives and made them more aware of the environment in which they took place.

I worked as a dive master at this starting company. I guided DSD’s (Discover Scuba Diving) and tourist dives around the Island of Gran Canaria (Spain). I also provided people with marine biology information like how they could enhance their dives using my knowledge of the animals.

While working as a caretaker I had several responsibilities. I provided guests with service and also did various tasks of domestic work to ensure the best experience for our guests.

Here I researched the swimming behavior of feather stars (crinoids). I recorded this using digital cameras which I analyzed digitally in MATLAB. Besides the research I also took care of various species of fish while I also gave tours through the aquarium facilities to both colleagues and students.

During this internship I was in charge of an exposure experiment with H. floridana. This was a pilot study on the effects of ocean acidification on sea cucumbers. During this experiment we used a variety of effects like alkalinity measurements and sea cucumber measurements. I also analyzed data of which I wrote a report.
