While this migration in still ongoing, we have already realized a tremendous decrease in operational costs, increased the flexibility and scale with which we operate.

As the Director of Infrastructure Engineering and Operations I am continuing to lead diversified teams of engineers across web engineering, data architecture, content delivery and operations.In this expanded role, I oversee, define and shape the strategy for HBO's infrastructure, including all web-facing services for HBO GO and HBO.com; database services both RDBMS and No-SQL; CDN content delivery including static file and extremely high-volume video delivery.

As a Manager within HBO Digital Products, I am continuing to lead the infrastructure engineering and support organizations powering HBO's premier web properties.In this position I am leading a team of passionate engineers who are working to re-architect, enhance and support some of HBO's largest consumer facing web properties including HBO GO, MAX GO, HBO.com and HBO Connect.

As a Project Leader with HBO Consumer Technology, I continued my infrastructure engineering for HBO.com, HBO and MAX GO while transitioning into a more management-focused position.In this position I continued to be a principal engineer for all aspects of HBO's consumer facing web properties while mentoring other members of the team, and working to guide sound, scalable and cost-effective technical solutions.Selected accomplishments include:• Re-architecting and scaling the HBO GO infrastructure to support a number of large-scale promotional events including a True Blood double-premier on HBO GO, which drove record amounts of traffic to the site.• Built a support organization who is responsible for the day-to-day engineering support for HBO's consumer facing web properties. This includes support of everything needed to maintain site reliability and performance. The engineers within the support organization interact with all technologies behind HBO's web properties including Apache, Weblogic, JBoss, Memcached, Cassandra, MongoDB.• Management of HBO Consumer Technologies managed hosting provider which includes budgeting, new service review, review and resourcing of all maintenance activities.

As a Senior Internet Architect within the HBO Web Technologies group, I was a primary engineer tasked with building the infrastructure to support HBO and MAX GO (http://www.hboogo.com, http://www.maxgo.com).In this position I deeply interacted with all components of both the HBO GO infrastructure and application, providing me an end-to-end knowledge of the service. This allows me to quickly and effectively engineer solutions to enhance the HBO GO service.I was the principal architect for a number of HBO GO infrastructure components including:• Global network design and optimization, including multi-location MPLS, FWSM, Cisco 6509 switches• Global application and service routing using F5 Networks BigIP GTM• Global VIP design and configuration using F5 Networks BigIP GTM and LTM, and Cisco ACE• Multi-datacenter server infrastructure using servers running on a variety of platforms including HP DL 380/580/980, HP BladeCenter, Egenera• Design and implementation of HBO GO's video origin service, including close to 1 PB of distributed storage synchronizing to multiple locations

As an Internet Architect within the HBO Web Technologies group, I worked to design, support and enhance the infrastructure for HBO's internal, B2B and consumer facing web properties. This encompassed multiple hosting locations and all technologies involved with running a large, distributed web application.Major accomplishments include:• Live-migration of HBO's DNS nameservers from an internal TimeWarner DNS provider to an external provider.• Re-IP of the HBO.com infrastructure during business hours, with no interruption to service. This included VIPs; web; application; CMS; database servers servicing live HBO.com traffic.• Research, design and implementation of service-level and distributed application monitoring using HP Sitescope and Compuware Gomez.• Work with management to research, evaluate and select a managed hosting provider for HBO. This included evaluation of facilities, provider infrastructure, geographic presence, SAS 70 and financial review.• Oversight of infrastructure design and deployment into new hosting facilities.

● Led a systems engineering team to design, system test, and deliver to market a managed VMware ESX virtualization product. To date over 30 ESX servers and over 150 virtual machines are in production, serving clients ranging from major sports franchises to financial trading corporations.● Designed an always available clustered iSCSI target built entirely using open-source applications. Currently used in multiple production VMware, MySQL, web application clusters.● Deploy and support complex MySQL clusters which carry a 100% uptime SLA for a variety of clients including prominent Web 2.0, financial and SaaS companies.● Collaborate with clients to assist in tuning all facets of their web applications to ensure maximum reliability, performance and uptime.● Served as a subject matter expert for Linux, VMware, MySQL, Apache, JBoss and Tomcat to internal staff, current and prospective clients.

• Managed and oversaw all systems engineering efforts for the National Cancer Imaging Archive (http://www.cancerimagingarchive.net/), a global cancer image repository containing over three million medical images. Included configuration, monitoring and troubleshooting of the J2EE web application containers, Apache, VSFTPD and clustered storage via IBM SanFS.• Planned and executed a massive, multiple datacenter VMWare migration project to upgrade a farm of ESX 2.5.4 servers, 1800 virtual machines and over 5 TB of storage to ESX Server 3.0.1 during normal business hours with no system downtime, while keeping the operation transparent to end users.• Conceptualized and developed a custom YUM update cluster to serve system and security updates to all RedHat Enterprise Linux servers.• Assumed responsibility for all shared group documentation through the implementation of a division-wide open source wiki. Ensured that all documentation was kept in an organized format, and facilitated promoting the use of the wiki to all staff.
