I do research into the economics of food and nutrition security (FNS) and food systems transformation, often in international teams with colleagues in research institutes in the Europe, CGIAR, Wageningen University and beyond. I do consultancy for and research with governments at national and municipal level and the EU, applying foresight analysis and understanding drivers and effective levers of food systems transformation. I enjoy fund-raising and coordination of multi-annual research programs.

The food systems observatory is a platform for sharing and developing methods, metrics, data and assessments on the European food system. Its research & innovation challenges are to improve the monitoring of the sustainability performance of food systems and of critical points in the transition towards a sustainable food system in Europe.

Membership of the Scientific Advisory Council of ILSI Europe, with focus on food security and sustainability.

In this research and innovation project led by the City of Milan 11 European cities implement food policies and pilot food innovations that are transformative for the urban food systems. My research addresses two questions: what are the expected impacts the interventions and how to evaluate contributions to food systems transformation? What are the opportunities to connect cities to impact investment in such food innovations and what arrangements (see: diagram) will make this easier?

Nigeria

In the research program Food Systems for Healthier Diets (2017-2022), we diagnose how well national food systems perform in terms of meeting the nutritional needs of consumers, and explore policy and innovation options in food systems that will contribute to improving food security and nutritional outcomes. My work is to diagnose and deliver foresight on the quality of diets and the change in the food systems in Nigeria. The other focus countries in the program are Ethiopia, Bangladesh and Vietnam.

With the integration of metrics, models and foresight, SUSFANS aims to set a scientific standard for assessing food and nutrition security along with food system sustainability in the EU. The project will inform policy reforms and supply chain innovations that contribute to a better alignment of healthy eating with sustainable production and consumption in the EU food system. In exchange with stakeholders, levers for change are identified, and the impact of SUSFANS in the long run is ensured.

FOODSECURE aims to assess and address the short and long term challenges in global food and nutrition security. As co-leader I am responsible for the flow and impact of the research program.

As a senior advisor at the IPC I supported the Washington-based secretariat on its European projects and fund-raising. I organized and facilitated meetings and discussion, maintained relations with Europe-based members, and co-wrote policy statements.
