Participants rotates through many clinical areas in the emergency department at NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn, including adult, pediatric, and psychiatric emergency rooms; triage; social work; community health worker offices; operating rooms; and emergency medical services. They also have the chance to join NYU Langone emergency medical technicians (EMTs) on ambulance ride-alongs. Participants change linens on stretchers, stock supplies, and serve as patient advocates. Volunteers are paired with a resident mentor, whom they shadow at NYU Langone’s Tisch Hospital. Participants attend weekly meetings where they reflect on what they experience during their shifts, hear from accomplished speakers, and take a social medicine course taught by an attending physician. They also complete a group literature review project and a health fair poster, my topic was Heart Disease and Hypertension.
