Born into a family of police officers you would have said that I was destined for a life in or around the legal profession - picture the day I told my parents therefore I wanted to be a solicitor. Fortunately for the Baker family dynamics my desire to pursue the profession leaned towards M&A and not the criminal bar. I made the immense voyage of 23 miles west to Liverpool (for my degree) and 16 miles east to Manchester (for my post-graduate) before practising in Manchester. I have always enjoyed the “deal craft” in a transaction – looking at problems or issues in a process and then finding the solutions to help get the deal over the line. When I had the opportunity to help establish the only TR team outside of London I jumped at the chance to work with insurance as the potential solution to these deal issues. I found growing the business incredibly satisfying and am working at this again with Wiispa. I am a Managing Director at Wiispa where I am responsible for client and insurer relations together being part of the senior broking team taking that lead on all transactional risk insurances. We assist with claims.We view insurance as having three layers on a deal: (1) the Warranty and Indemnity insurance covering unknown risks, (2) Contingent Risk Cover covering certain known risks and (3) General Insurance being the usual annually renewable business insurance policies.We believe the next evolution of Transactional Risk will see the clear-thinking principles of M&A applied to General Insurance.
