  • Western Kentucky University
    Director Geophysical Innovations Laboratory
Western Kentucky University Jan 2016 - Oct 2019
Currently serving as the Director of the Geophysical Innovations Laboratory (GIL) at Western Kentucky University (WKU), Department of Geography and Geology. Duties include being the regional technical expert for geophysical investigations, while developing new research initiatives and applying geophysical methods to technical problem that are often ill defined. Solutions are developed for projects were standard methods are unable to resolve the problem and/or existing data are incomplete or non-existent, controversial, or uncertain. I am called upon to represent an authoritative source of consultation for consultants, scientists and engineers. Many of the issues are significant and affect the organization’s programs. The proposals and solutions require defending findings and recommendations at private/public meetings and/or in professional venues. The GIL currently is working with the Earth and Environmental Cabinet of Kentucky under a Memorandum of Agreement to provide the Division of Waste Management, Superfund Branch with solutions to a variety of environment and engineering problems. Current initiatives include determining the source of DNAPLs in a karst environment, investigations into the distribution of DNAPLs and LNAPLs in groundwater associated with the McCrackin County, KY, landfill and the investigation of the extent and groundwater distribution of a construction induced landslide at the Maxey Flat low level nuclear waste disposal site in Kentucky. These projects include the use of refraction microtremor (ReMi) and electrical resistivity/induced potential.
  • Atc Group Services
    Senior Geophysicist
Atc Group Services May 2014 - Dec 2016
    Cincinnati Area, Ky
Currently building a geophysics market and client base for geophysical contracts in environmental, engineering and mining applications for ATC Inc. with a strong desire to reach out to geotechnical engineering, downhole logging and mining engineering and exploration. Specialties include electrical resistivity tomography (ERT), induced potential (IP) and refraction microtremor (ReMi) a seismic surface wave method. Have performed geophysical investigations in Karst for foundation assessment, pond emplacement and repair and environmental applications. Designed geophysical investigations, managed day to day operations, processed and interpreted data for fifty mile pipeline for subsurface information of horizontal directional drilling sites and shear wave velocity profiles of potential landslide and blasting/ripping sites. Have conducted geophysical surveys on underground storage tank product releases to determine optimal locations for remediation wells and extent of contamination. Have presented seminars to multiple professional groups and industry professionals promoting the use of near surface geophysics.
  • Northern Kentucky University
Laboratory For Applied Geophysics Director/Geophysics Lecturer
Northern Kentucky University Oct 2005 - Nov 2015
    Highland Heights Ky
Currently serve as the Laboratory for Applied Geophysics Director at Northern Kentucky University for the Center for Integrative Natural Science and Mathematics. Duties include outreach to industry, schools and the community, lecturing geophysics classes in the Department of Physics and Geology, and conducting applied geophysical research. Outreach to industry includes instructing sections of the US EPA Overview of Environmental Geophysics, the practical uses of geophysics and to showcase the Laboratory for Applied Geophysics research, its faculty, staff and students. Have developed and implemented three geophysics classes into the geology curriculum: Introduction to Geophysics, Geophysical Modeling and Software and Applied Geophysics. To continue the applied aspect, classes are always broken into “companies” and are required to plan, execute and report on a project. The local community’s requests for solutions to problems provides students with projects and provides outreach to the area. Additionally there are multiple independent studies conducted each semester. Current research concentrates on the use of ReMi techniques and ERT as they apply to delineating landslides, understanding subsurface features of karst and delineating extent of UST contamination. Currently using ERT to delineate bitumen sand plays for the Stampede mine in Logan County Kentucky as part of a drive to develop unconventional hydrocarbon reservoirs. Using electrical resistivity and induced potential to explore local barite sulfide deposits to identify subsurface structure at depth. Identifying multiple applications to science, engineering and real world problems are a main tenant of the Laboratory’s mission.
