At Mayo Clinic Rochester, the Desk Operations Specialist is a versatile and varied role. Each department has a little different job description and use of the DOS team. I work in general internal medicine, in both the domestic and international side. Specifically, we see patients who are coming to Mayo Clinic Rochester who do not have primary care. We offer consultative services to help arm patients and their primary providers with knowledge and expertise they need. I work with our complex care patients, who are coming to us because they have a complex history and have seen many local providers. These patients come to us to be seen by multiple specialties. We tie together all the information from those specialties and present a more cohesive episode of care. I also work with our Post Covid Long Haulers, where we are doing very specialized care for those suffering with lasting effects of COVID infections. My job duties are varied. I do more than other DOS due to some of my many talents. I am able to work at our reception desk checking patients in and out. I am able to do intakes, getting a patient's height, weight and other vital signs. The main expertise of GIM DOS is doing scheduling. I create schedules for patients and help with trying to move appointments into the time they are planning on being at Mayo Clinic. I answer phone calls and patient messages. I also work in our video visit team, where we help connect patients virtually, offer technical help when problems arise and alert the providers when the patient is ready. On top of that, I do a lot of other, very specialized work. I am very technically savvy. I operate as our department's IT help. Our management will refer others to me if there is an issue, prior to having to contact our IT department. I also fix mechanical issues with some of our devices. I pilot new ideas to see if they work. I also create documents and programs to lessen the burden on the rest of the team.
