About Thomas Caton Harrison

I am a polar climate scientist at the British Antarctic Survey. My work focuses on improving our understanding of the narrow belt of easterly winds which encircle Antarctica and which are crucial for ocean heat transport towards vulnerable ice shelves. I am especially interested in applying data science techniques in climate science and meteorology. As part of my DPhil at the University of Oxford I developed algorithms for detecting and tracking major dust storms in the remote central Sahara using satellite imagery. I also have a keen interest in long-term weather records, including work to modernise the Central England Temperature dataset and as an observer for the Radcliffe Meteorological Station.

Working in the National Climate Information Centre, I created a new version of the world's longest instrumental record, Central England Temperature. To achieve this, I wrote a suite of python software to generate the series from scratch and implemented updates to the calculation of adjustments and usage of constituent stations through time. Crucially, this ensured traceability and reproducibility of the important dataset. I now aim to prepare a journal article to accompany the updates.
