Working in the Materials and Manufacturing Directorate through the Pathways program, I explored the effectiveness of the varying grit sizes in the grit blast sol-gel surface preparation method for bonded aluminum aircraft field repairs. I carried out analysis on the surface morphology of prepared aluminum plates through measurements of surface energy and roughness to explore their relation to adhesion quality. Wedge tests (ASTM D3762) in humidity chambers were conducted to determine environmental durability of adhesion. I also gained experience using Scanning Electron Microscope, Portable Autoclave, and Profilometer. I was involved in the planning, execution, and presentation stages of the project.
