CurrentA trusted tax advisor with over 35 years of experience, Tom is a Managing Director inCherry Bekaert’s Washington, D.C. practice. He specializes in the area of tax controversy,as well as provides guidance on TEFRA partnership procedures, international informationreporting, and IRS procedural matters.Tom represents clients before the IRS in pre-filing agreements, in examinations throughthe appeals phase and post-appeals mediation. He also helps clients understand andapply complex provisions of the Internal Revenue Code. Such provisions include thestatute of limitations for deficiencies and overpayments, mitigation provisions, unifiedaudit procedures for TEFRA partnerships, reportable transactions, accuracy-relatedpenalties, information reporting penalties, reporting foreign financial accounts, andvarious other procedural statues and regulations.Furthermore, Tom’s background includes serving 20 years as a director at twointernational professional services firms. He also spent 10 years with the IRS workingat the District Council and Chief Counsel offices in Washington, D.C., and was asenior trial attorney in the Miami District Counsel Office. In these varied roles, Tom haspresented topics on tax controversies and IRS procedures to the Tax Executive Institute,the Tax Section of the American Bar Association, Bloomberg BNA Seminars and otherprofessional groups. Prior to Cherry Bekaert, he was a Managing Director in the NationalTax Office at one of the country’s largest independent tax firms.
