Tom Austin currently serves as the 13th Architect of the Capitol. He is responsible to the United States Congress for the maintenance, operation, development, and preservation of the United States Capitol complex, which includes the Capitol, the congressional office buildings, the Library of Congress buildings and grounds, the Supreme Court building and grounds, the U.S Botanic Garden, the Capitol Power Plant, Capitol Grounds and Arboretum, and other facilities. The Architect oversees approximately 18.5 million square feet of space across 36 structures and 570 acres. The agency is comprised of approximately 2,500 employees and has a more than $1B annual budget. The Capitol campus is home to 30,000 daily occupants and hosts about 5 million visitors annually.He formerly worked as a Senior Program Manager for the MBP-AECOM Joint Venture helping manage, schedule, and provide risk management for the Cannon House Office Building Renewal Project in Washington, DC. His last military assignment was Director of Engineering for Arlington National Cemetery (ANC) where he oversaw all Engineering, Maintenance, Horticulture, Environmental, Cultural Resources, Real Property, and Master Planning operations at our Nation's most sacred shrine. He was the project lead and chief engineer for the $480+M Southern Expansion Project which will add 50 acres and 80,000 burial opportunities to ANC in order to extend its active service life well into the future. He also managed the yearly $25M sustainment, restoration, and modernization program to honor our fallen servicemembers and their families, maintain the operability of the cemetery, and improve the visitors' experience.Tom is a veteran of over 29 years of active-duty military service in the U.S. Army with a focus on leadership, training, personnel development, program development, and project execution. He has multiple combat deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan as well as contingency deployments to Bosnia and South Korea. He commanded Soldiers at the battalion, company, and platoon levels including the command of the 54th Engineer Battalion (Daggers) in Bamberg, Germany. Tom has an extensive background in program and project development. He developed and oversaw the execution of construction projects of all sizes. He served at multiple levels in the Army from the platoon all the way to strategic levels including at the Headquarters, Department of the Army. He currently holds a Top Secret clearance as well as Professional Engineer, Certified Construction Manager, and Project Manager Professional certifications.
