This job has provided my first taste of a responsible role in the engineering department on-board a ship. It was a good opportunity to work in a small watch keeping team and then the wider team of the entire department.

Learning the knowledge and skills required to become a qualified Engineering officer.This was achieved through a mixture of college based study and sea time.

A British Antarctic Survey support vessel. This was a very educational experience on how a ship operates in the very hostile conditions of the waters around the south pole, and the extra shipboard systems this requires.

MS RotterdamA Holland America Line Cruise ship. Despite being a short trip, it was fascinating to discover how the machinery and equipment differed from the ‘Azumasan’; for example, the usage of a high voltage electric propulsion system rather than single engine, direct drive propulsion.

AzumasanAn MOL VLCC. This was my first long term experience on board a Large commercial ship, and it was very enjoyable, but also informative. I specifically remember our 72-hour resupply in Fujairah, which was a great lesson in ship logistics and organisation of a ship’s crew.

Helping to serve food and take orders for the hotel restaurant.Serving on the hotel bars, and being entrusted with maintaining the pumps correctly. Helping with major functions, such as weddings, to set up and clear away decorations and tables within a time limit.

Be able to help with any problems that might occur and look after the students.

I prepared and cooked three meals a day for a crew of up to 16 people. I was required to organise the galley and look after the shopping list. I was also required to help sail the vessel when necessary and lead teams of trainees in certain tasks if required.
