Every student who sits in my classroom has a unique story to tell and a thirst for knowledge. As students in my classroom, they will be expected to work hard but they will also be accountable to both me, as a teacher, and to themselves. Students will be able to take risks, invite ideas, and add to the discussion in a safe and secure environment that encourages their involvement.While it is the teacher’s role to impart knowledge, it is also to guide students through what Vygotsky called their ZPDs. My goals are to bring students to the edge of those zones and give them the information and confidence to make the leap into the next one. Through this method of self-discovery, students will gain confidence with their knowledge. As they take more ownership of their education, they will be motivated to work hard and achieve further. In helping students develop a love of knowledge, themselves, and their classmates, the students will feel secure and safe. They will know that the classroom is a fair arena for them to share, discuss, and grow. As a teacher, it is important for me to be able to foster open dialogue with students and show them that when they take initiative in their education, good things can come of it. Through the use of formative assessment and discussion, students will be able to self-examine and begin open dialogue with both themselves and classmates to encourage growth and learning. For myself, teaching is an opportunity to continue my learning and growth. I hope my intensity and passion shines through and is shared by the students. It is important to have dedicated, passionate, and intelligent individuals who enjoy going to work in the classroom everyday. The workplace should be collaborative and goal-oriented so both the teacher and students see where they want to go. Teachers play an important role in the community in ensuring our students have the toolkits to become successful, productive, and inquisitive members of society.
