Propulsion LeadWaterloo Rocketry Aug 2023 - PresentWaterloo, Ontario, CanadaLeading a team of 20 students in the design of liquid bi-propellant rocket engines.• Responsible for the design, fabrication and testing of Waterloo Rocketry’s first successful liquid bipropellant rocket engine using novel coaxial swirl injectors and custom ablative liners. Designed in SolidWorks, calculated appropriate loads and stresses to maintain adequate safety factors, wrote engine simulations in Excel, and successfully tested the engine at a peak thrust of 6.6kN, meeting all primary test objectives. • Led a characterization campaign of coaxial swirl injectors for liquid bipropellant rocket engines. Designed test fixturing and plumbing using SolidWorks and completed 9 individual cold flows with both water and CO2. Modeled two phase flow of nitrous oxide using single flow incompressible, Dyer, and homogenous equilibrium models to accurately predict mass flowrate of propellants to within 0.3 kg/s. • Worked in a team to design and assemble plumbing panels to remotely load liquid nitrous oxide and nitrogen into on-board vehicle tanks. Created and reviewed P&IDs, modelled the panels in SolidWorks, assembled the panels using Swagelok and JIC fittings and aided development procedures for nominal operations and aborts. • Designed flight ready liquid rocket engine, including mechanical design of concentric propellant tanks, propellant manifolding, lower tank bulkhead and a weight optimized injector manifold designed with Ansys Mechanical. -
Propulsion MemberWaterloo Rocketry Sep 2022 - Aug 2023Waterloo, Ontario, Canada -
Design Engineering InternLiftwerx Jan 2024 - Apr 2024Cambridge, Ontario, Canada• Designed lifting devices to ASME BTH-1 design code standards. Performed calculations to ensure that stresses were within allowable limits, including for welded assemblies. Checked center of mass and rigging plans to ensure adequate stability for large, unbalanced loads including 80-ton turbine rotors.• Worked with a senior engineer to conceptually design a rotor lock and main shaft clamp for a new type of turbine. Optimized fabrication costs by replacing complicated weldments with I-beams.• Modeled conceptual designs for modifying an existing 10-ton crane base to work with a larger turbine interface. -
Lift Plans InternLiftwerx May 2023 - Aug 2023Cambridge, Ontario, Canada• Created over 50 jobsite lift plans using complex SolidWorks assemblies. Reworked and optimized assemblies to reduce lift plan completion time by over 50%.• Prototyped designs for safety devices, such as new lighter aluminum railings and turbine safety hatches, eliminating dropped tooling falling 80 meters from the top of the turbine.
