Thomas Gabel is Professor for Computer Science and Mathematics with focus on machine learning and artificial intelligence at the Faculty of Computer Science and Engineering at Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences. Previously, Thomas has been working in the field of air traffic and arrival management at the German Air Navigation Service Provider (Deutsche Flugsicherung). He has been involved in research and development of intelligent software for planning and scheduling to support arrival management as well as in research projects in the context of the European SESAR initiative. Before that, he was a Post-Doc (2009/10) at the Machine Learning Lab at the University of Freiburg.During the recent years, Thomas' research and work focus has been on autonomous and intelligent systems, specifically on artificial intelligence and machine learning in multi-agent systems, on decentralized control, reinforcement learning, as well as in scheduling, games, knowledge management and case-based reasoning.From 2004 to 2009, he was working as scientific researcher and PhD student at the Neuroinformatics Group at the University of Osnabrueck with focus on multi-agent reinforcement learning and its application to distributed job-shop scheduling problems. He received his PhD "summa cum laude" from the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Osnabrueck in June 2009. Thomas studied Computer Science at the University of Kaiserslautern and received his Diploma degree (comparable to Master) in 2003.Besides his academic work, Thomas was also team leader and project manager for the robotic soccer simulation team Brainstormers, which is a team of intelligent software agents participating in the soccer simulation league of RoboCup. While heading this team, the Brainstormers achieved three world-champion and six European-level champion titles in robotic soccer.
