After completing my degree to a 2:1 standard at a Russell Group university, I am now trying to use the skills I have built through hobbies and studies to find new avenues for my career. I have tutored since I was 17, both to support myself through university and because I enjoyed the rewards of teaching. This has constantly improved my ability to communicate effectively and clearly, and work as a team with students, teachers, and parents. I think that in order to help others learn, you constantly strive to understand what helps you to learn and aim to overcome the conception that you are not capable of certain subjects or tasks. The process of teaching a growth mindset has in turn made me reflect on what I believe I’m capable of. So, after designing my first website, logo, posters and collating a list of all the schools I wanted to focus my advertising on - I created my own online tuition business – Proteus Tuition. This is something that previously I would have thought myself incapable of doing, but after hard work, communicating with developers and managing multiple social media accounts, I came out on the other side with something to be proud of and have multiple successful students. My degree was something I somewhat regretted. As I was the first in my family to go to university, I wanted to take a safe route and English was something I was good at, so logically I chose that despite my interest in technology, coding and repairing electronics. After having finished my degree, I started to reassess the qualities it had developed in me. I realised that study on this level has given me an understanding of how to research and apply that research well. When there is a topic I want to understand - ranging from repairing an Xbox One to Globalisations Effect on Terrorism - I surprise myself with my ability to find and use resources to build a more comprehensive picture. I have learnt to video edit, build computers, modify headphones and re-seed a lawn more effectively thanks to this skill. In my career my end goal would be to transition away from the conventional fields associated with my degree to a job in the technology market – with a preference towards becoming a Software Engineer.
