The five years COMPASS Project funded by USAID implemented to address Health and Education in 51 Local governments of 5 states in Nigeria. As one of the Key Experts, my scope of work included the design and implementation of ICB strategy that will build the capacity of NGOs, CBOs Community Coalitions, Parent Teacher Associations, and Quality Improvement Teams using different methodology in ensuring that they are relevant in addressing health and education issues within the communities. In addition to the above roles, we supported NGOs, PTAs in the implementation and review and monitoring of program implemented in their areas. I coordinate activities that influence improvement of community awareness, participation and ownership of Education and Health activities in the state office. Within a span of three years (2004 -2007) I guided the selection of NGOS, PTAs, Community Coalitions at State and Local Government levels; facilitated the development of plans of action for community engagement in 7 LGAs and Catchment Areas; trained 14 Community Coalitions 27 PTAs, 4 NGOs in Participatory Learning (PLA) and guided the formation of Quality improvement Teams in the in the catchment areas. This was made possible through strategic partnership with state and local governments through cohesive advocacy to ensure project ownership and sustainability. In the process of setting up the platform for COMPASS Project, in collaboration with the Community Mobilization Manager, I coordinated the formation of grassroots community structures called Community Coalitions (CC). The process entailed series of advocacy meetings with community leaders and stakeholders as well as the training community members on the strategy of Community Action Cycle (CAC) and Partnership/community Defined Quality (PDQ). Community Coalitions are the platforms thru which demand creation and program ownership were established.
