Japan is a powder haven I had the privilege of visiting to instruct and train. Powder, as glorious as it is, provided some difficulties due to the sheer amount of it when teaching guests and training candidates hoping to sit their level 1 & 2 NZSIA certifications. Part of my role at Next Stage required me to shuttle clients to and from their desired ski areas as well as create an experience for them to enjoy snowsports and all the amenities a ski resort like Niseko has to offer. Learning to ski was a big part of that however it was not always my clients priority. That was certainly new for me and took some time to balance with the other part of my job which was to train instructors. I was involved with a gap program throughout the season and I took joy in seeing candidates become part of the snowsports industry. Night training sessions for instructors from various other ski schools made up most of my evenings. Those sessions mainly focused on technical aspects of skiing, rather than progression building as the gap program favoured, due to the experience of the participants. I very much look forward to skiing/training/teaching in Niseko again!

Working at Turoa kickstarted my career as a ski instructor. As a rookie instructor I gained experience a skills while teaching a large variety of lessons, the biggest on any resort I have worked at since. I have learned how to teach skiers of all ages, levels of fitness and skiing ability as well as honed my knowledge as to identify quickly and effectively how to improve someone in the allotted lesson time. My passion for what I do all comes from Turoa. I have worked my way from being an every day ski instructor, to a supervisor in charge of handing out lessons/adjusting the schedule day to day as well as one of 2 specialised coaches in charge of Turoa's competitive freestyle team. Team Ruapehu competes in all junior national freeride and freestyle competitions with much success. A number of the team members are national champions and we help all of the athletes in the team to better themselves as skiers. I am not ashamed to say many are much more talented than me.My work with RAL has once again transformed and I have become the Head Coach of Turoas Team Ruapehu. Setting up the program to rebuild after it was paused through 2020 has been a challenge but has also been a chance for me to organise a team of coaches. They have been invaluable in coming up with ideas and reforming Turoas competitive program to get it back to the standard it was in 2019.

Nannying was not something I ever expected to do but it was a great experience and suited my skillset while I spent time in the UK. COVID-19 altered my original plans to continue ski coaching but Kindred Nannies found me a family with 3 young boys in need of a role model and carer while their parents worked full time. My duties included cooking nutritious dinners, driving the children home from school, assisting their parents with keeping their house in order, taking them to activities through the school holidays and helping with homeschooling during various lockdowns. I thoroughly enjoyed working with the family and I was tested into being creative when keeping the kids occupied. Like with my primary work as a ski instructor, communication was vital with the children's parents and it opened my mind to the possibility of working more with kids in the future.

As a Roaming Office Coordinator I was responsible for meeting and greeting every customer who came into a branch with the highest level of service. I assisted offices in fundamental day to day administrative tasks which was essential to the smooth running of an office. I gained insight into both Sales and Lettings processes in the real estate industry as well as traveled and worked all over London in M&P offices.

Nendaz, Switzerland

Teaching skiing to clients from many different countries on a vast ski hill. I exclusively taught private lessons and holiday camps. The challenge was breaking down language barriers with guests young and old in a way that allowed me to covey some of the finer aspects of skiing. Training on consistently pitched and groomed terrain improved my own skiing as I worked towards my level 3 NZSIA qualification.

As the only Scheduling Supervisor in the department it was my job to make sure I provided a suitable instructor to every single lesson operating on any given day on the ski hill. Schedules were set 3 weeks in advance but were subject to change on a daily basis as the is a need for fluidity and flexibility when working with 80+ instructors and helpers. My role required me to communicate to other departments such as Guest Services to make sure we were providing a quality product and had lesson numbers and sizes allocated appropriately. As a supervisor I was expected to communicate with employees and often give them news they may not have liked. It was a learning curve but the ski school functioned effectively and I feel I contributed to that.

Teaching skiing to a variety of guests of different ages and abilities on a beginner ski hill. As a qualified instructor I was expected to provide a good example to new/young instructors by teaching skiing in a safe concise and enjoyable way. Taking school groups up of to 15 students provided a challenge but as the ski hill was so accessible to all people living in Vancouver city teaching students week after week meant their skills developed quickly. Private lessons with guests of all ages and levels happened throughout the day and even into the night as the ski field operated into the evenings.

Mt Maunganui, New Zealand

Operating a kiwifruit sizing machine for 60+ workers. The role was a balancing act between keeping the workers on the line packing efficiently by not overloading the machine or the workers with fruit. If the machine malfunctioned it was my job to isolate the issue and keep the machine running as well as I could to support the graders, boxers, packers and stackers working the line.
