The majority of my career was spent working in emergency medical services. In the back of an ambulance throughout rural Oklahoma, inside one of the busiest emergency departments on the south side of Oklahoma City, covid units in Brooklyn, & a trauma center ER in Washington DC have all been my comfort zone. When leaving emergency medicine, especially after experiencing what so many of us did during the pandemic, you have a loss of identity & purpose. It's hard to understand who you are without being who you were when you were doing what you did. I've come to find that, in my opinion, no matter the career you choose to do there is one thing that they all have in common & if you keep that in the forefront of your mind it will help you stay mentally healthy as well as be successful. Everything is customer service. Every single position I've ever held has been customer service. From working to save a life on the side of a highway to web development work for an auto body shop to working with mortuary services during a pandemic to photographing black tie political galas it's all just customer service. Is that an over simplification, yes but I still believe its not wrong. Be minded you're in the service of your neighbors in what ever you do. Be minded that your well done to the best of your ability no matter success or failure is a shared success in itself.
