About Thomas Baker
Hello, my name is Thomas J. Baker and I am currently a PhD student at McMaster University in the Faculty of Engineering. I graduated from Chemical Engineering and Bioengineering, a program that gives me a diverse background in the engineering applications of chemical and biological sciences. I am profoundly passionate in learning and have acquired a love of learning which drives my interest in understanding the impact of chemical engineering on society. Inspired from this knowledge, I want to find innovate solutions to large and small problems in society especially regarding sustainability. This has brought me to electrochemical research which I am currently performing in my graduate studies and I believe is vital for the promise for sustainable energy systems. In my pursuit of understanding the world better I have engaged in many classes, jobs, and organizations over the years and in all of them I have put in genuine effort to strive for success in each venture. In developing through university I have had the pleasure to take part in multiple research projects where I developed proficient lab based skills, along with a desire to understand many concepts that drive novel ideas in chemical engineering research.Going forward I’d like to take on my passion of solving social issues especially environmental unsustainability. I see this happening through engineering new scientific solutions or alternatives by applying the triple bottom line of sustainability to renovate our energy systems, and reconcile the lifecycle impacts of our materials. Specifically, I am excited about the promise of electrochemcial devices to bridge the gap of sustainable industrial systems. However, I am also passionate about reconnecting engineering and politics where policy based on fact and reasoning can be used to help overcome short-sighted goals and apply long term strategies to improve society.
