Managing the day to day running of a home office research fish laboratory and facility, this involves looking after the welfare of a variety of fresh water fish species, marine invertebrates and insect species. I am trained to provide care through correct feeding, well-being, water quality, health checks, medication/ treatment and euthanasia. Through managing the facility, I ensure up to date records of illnesses and deaths are kept in relation to home office standards, write risk assessments and COSHH forms, assist with research and provide training and inductions for new researchers and staff to the facility. I also assist in supervising and advising undergraduate project students with their dissertation research within the lab environment. I am required to manage part time technicians in the facility, in regards to holiday cover, rotas and updating their training. This also means I am heavily involved in the recruitment process for new part time technicians. Recently, I have been helping a research assistant and a PhD student to collect data, using a video set up, through filming isolated guppy movements during open field trials and emergence time. After each trial the guppies are weighed, measured and have their individual tag read. I have also helped to take a range of photos of shore crabs under a UV camera filter to look at colour change relating to global warming. In the facility, I am responsible for the monitoring, watering, maintenance, space allocation and climatic control settings for 2 large research greenhouses.
