About Thomas Kurth

I have spent most of my professional career in Sports: from 1990-2000 I was Head of Competitions at the European Football Association UEFA., where I significantly contributed to the creation of the UEFA Champions League in 1992 and its further development as well as to the extension of the EURO Final Tournament from 8 to 16 National Teams in 1996.In 2000 I followed the call of the 14 major European Football Clubs who wished to strengthen their position within the international football governance structures and was appointed the Grouping’s General Manager. The final result of my mission was a groundbreaking agreement between Clubs and the international football governing bodies UEFA and FIFA in 2008, resolving a series of long lasting conflicts between the parties and leading to the creation of the European Club Association ECA.Since 2008 I have been involved in various projects within the global Sports Industry as an independent consultant, focusing on governance issues, strategic development, project and event management in professional Football as well as in other sports such as Handball and Road Cycling. After having been called to conduct the operations at the Headquarters of the International Powerboating Federation (UIM) in Monaco after the departure of the previous Secretary General in July 2014, I have been appointed UIM Secretary General by the UIM Council on 25th October, on occasion of the 87th UIM General Assembly in Ibiza (ESP).
