Innovative Energy Solutions is a company that sells processing plants to convert most forms of polymers into diesel fuel. The company uses a half metric ton a day batch process plant to run experiments and to demonstrate the technology. A wide variety of tasks were performed for this job. Prepared, executed, and documented experiments. Updated paperwork and paid close attention to detail to ensure the plant’s operations comply with safety standards. Gave presentations to classes and groups that were interested in the technology. Day to day activities included plant maintenance and procurement.

VSI Aerospace is a research and technology firm that specializes in ‘software and hardware solutions for integrated design, optimization, instrumentation, modeling, control, and simulation of aerospace vehicles.’ Performed mechanical engineering work for a group researching the correlation between backlash and flutter in aircraft control surfaces. Worked on the project from initial design conception through manufacturing and testing. Developed, modeled, and analyzed design solutions with Solidworks, FEA, and Matlab. Programmed and operated 3-axis CNC mills. Created engineering drawings and worked with outside manufacturers to ensure parts and assemblies were within tolerance. Designed, built, and implemented test stands for static and dynamic tests of various components and assemblies. The project has been successfully tested in a wind tunnel at Iowa State University.

Utilized knowledge of indexable inserts and cutting geometry to model and design tooling for horizontal boring machines. Many of the tools were boring bar heads that used C and S-shaped inserts. Another project incorporated concepts of volumetric accuracy and measurement repeatability to design an artifact whose purpose was to test horizontal boring machines and a CMM. The objective of the largest project was to design a machine tool touch probe to aid in the machining of large castings with small tolerances. The probe was designed and modeled. Accompanying engineering drawings utilizing GD&T were created. Finally, manufacturers and suppliers were contacted, and the parts were manufactured and assembled. G-code programs were written to test the probes before full-scale implementation.
