As an Air Traffic Controller, I provide instructions and information to aircraft under my control to achieve a safe, orderly and expeditious flow of air traffic. Whilst carrying out all ATCO duties as required to meet and exceed the needs of the customer the contract and the service delivery. With the addition of a radar unit on site this has introduced Radar PFL and PAR approaches and increased the mix of IFR/ VFR integration into a busy circuit, continuous liaison with the RAF radar unit has been key to completing the task. The primarily flying task consists of the Grob 115E Tutor aircraft flying Elementary Flying Training, University Air Squadron & Air experience flights with the addition of 115SQN the Central flying Schools exam wing.My responsibilities include:- Ensuring that the integrity of the airfield is maintained at all times, that runways, surfaces, Lighting, equipment and surrounding areas are fully serviceable and support safe operation- Control of traffic flying in and in the vicinity of the ATZ and aircraft taking-off and landing- Sequencing the arrival and departure of visual and instrument traffic- Alerting and dispatch of the safety services- Control of aircraft, vehicles and pedestrians on the manoeuvring area- Liaison with RAF Wittering radar for departure clearances, Radar approaches and MATZ, ATZ transits - Providing direction and liaison to ATSAs in the execution of their duties - Ensuring all legal, contractual and business documentation is compiled correctly- Mentoring new starters and being building a custodianI have been involved with the start-up and continuation of the civil controlling task at RAF Wittering. The unit consists of a civil tower with an adjacent RAF radar Unit, operating to CAA & MAA rules following best safe practice to fulfil an ever changing and evolving contract, Adapting to military procedures whilst retaining the flexibility to use civilian controlling techniques when appropriate.

• To provide accurate and relevant information to pilots controlling taxiing aircraft and advise to joining and circuit aircraft, paying particular attention to different needs of fixed wing, rotary and jet aircraft. To ensure a safe, efficient and expeditious flow of traffic. • Provide clear Instruction and information to assist parking of aircraft and pass vital information to aircraft and obtain read backs, dealing with emergencies in an appropriate manner demonstrating a good knowledge of local geography and airspace.• Liaise with customers, ground crew, ATS units, visitors face to face by telephone radio or email as appropriate, and taking into account prioritisation of workload and ensuring all policies and procedures are adhere to ensure safety.

Assistant to the FISO on watch, I was responsible for answering telephone and emails, preparing flight progress strips, flight planning and liaison with UK customs and emergency services. Skills that I had to keep up to date for later role as FISO
