About Thomas Lawrence
I am the media relations manager for the California State Teachers' Retirement System (CalSTRS) in West Sacramento. This is a rewarding job with the mission of sustaining the trust and securing the future of California's educators and beneficiaries. My job includes overseeing a strong, tight-knit team, communicating with and providing responses to members of the media, writing news releases, video scripts and materials for internal and external publications, and developing key messaging for the programs and ideas most important to CalSTRS and its members. I was previously a media relations specialist at CalSTRS between August 2019 and early January 2024 before earning the promotion to manager.Beginning in autumn 2017, I began working for the State of California as an information officer for the California Department of Transportation, District 10. I've taken all of the skills I sharpened as a sports reporter for six years at the daily newspapers in Stockton and Redding and used them on a new path.I am still currently a freelance sports reporter, and in the past year have had bylines in The Athletic, The Record, The Modesto Bee, the Santa Rosa Press Democrat, the Lodi News-Sentinel and the Manteca Bulletin.I have experience covering professional sports, including stories on NFL alumni from San Joaquin County, and have kept a Twitter audience of over 5,000 followers despite becoming freelance-only.
