  • University Of California, Riverside
    Post Doctoral Researcher
University Of California, Riverside Dec 2015 - May 2016
    Riverside, Ca, Us
Supervision of 4 undergraduate and graduate students in a laboratory setting that utilizes equipment to run plasma experiments. The experiments being investigated are to further the fundamental understanding of non-thermal plasmas, and for the creation of new and existing materials for material applications. Job duties include: 1. optimizing a schedule for multiple experiments that utilize the same equipment allowing for maximum output of data and materials. 2. Design and assembly of custom reactor systems for advanced in-situ fundamental measurements of non-thermal plasmas 3. Interfacing newly designed reactor systems with software (LabVIEW, matlab), for the creation of automated testing equipment. 4. Collection and analysis of data for weekly meetings and publication.
  • University Of California, Riverside
    Doctoral Candidate
University Of California, Riverside Nov 2014 - Dec 2015
    Riverside, Ca, Us
Research in the area of non-thermal plasmas and their applications. Designed and constructed reactors used to carry out, in-situ and ex-situ, fundamental measurements of non-thermal RF plasmas. In-situ measurements include: Fourier transform Infrared absorbance, optical emission spectroscopy, and ion density measurements to name a few. Ex-situ Characterization included transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. This work allowed for the ability to empirically measure a particle’s temperature as it was immersed in a plasma. At the same time, a collaboration with JPL utilizing non-thermal plasmas produced nona-particles as precursor powders for densification processes was in progress. The powders are used to produce nano-structured bulk materials to study their thermoelectric capabilities, see JPL job description.
  • University Of California, Riverside
    Research Assistant
University Of California, Riverside Jul 2011 - Nov 2014
    Riverside, Ca, Us
  • Nasa Jet Propulsion Laboratory
    Graduate Student Researcher
Nasa Jet Propulsion Laboratory Feb 2013 - Dec 2015
    Pasadena, Ca, Us
Graduate research assistant utilizing precursor powders produced via non-thermal plasmas for densification processes. Samples produced were n-type silicon materials utilized in thermoelectric applications. My responsibilities at JPL were: 1. modification of hot press profiles and procedures to produce nano-structured bulk silicon samples. 2. Characterization of the produced samples, e.g. Thermal Conductivity, Seebeck, and Hall-effect measurements for figure of merit (ZT) calculations. 3. X-Ray Diffraction, Scaning Electrom Microscopy, and Transmission Electron Microscopy for structural characterization of the material. The overall goal of this collaboration was to show that precursor powders produced via non-thermal plasmas could compete with other powder production methods, e.g. ball milling, and return a good ZT value. The study was successful and the collaboration between Prof. Mangolini’s lab and JPL has been extended to a new PhD student in Prof. Mangolini’s lab.
