This project has focused on reducing perioperative non-routine events by improving the reliability of patient handoffs from the cardiac OR to the ICU at our university hospital. In this handoff re-design process, my responsibilities have included analyzing baseline characteristics of current handoffs, reviewing literature, process mapping, performing a stakeholder analysis, creating an evaluation tool assessing technical and non-technical elements of a handoff, leading simulations for designing the “ideal” handoff, developing a trained observer curriculum, handoff re-design implementation, post-intervention surveying, and data analysis. This has resulted in numerous abstract and poster presentations. Show less
