One of the major advantages of the prestressed tank is its negligible maintenance cost. Life-cycle accounting will typically show that maintenace on a steel tank will generally exceed its original cost while the cost spent on a prestressed concrete tank over its life, is merely a fraction of its original cost. Most extensively, is the design and construction of water storage tanks and reservoirs - surface, elevated, or completely buried. Preload tanks have also been widely employed in sanitary (wastewater) engineering and liquid conditioning; as sludge digesters, clarifiers, floculators and thickeners, as well as for sedimentation, aeration and filter tanks. Preload confirmed the suitability of prestressed concrete for cryogenic storage in 1952 with the construction of two liquified oxygen tanks. Among the numerous applications of Preload's cryogenic technology since that date are two (2) 100,000cu.m. liquified natural gas (LNG) tanks for the Philadelphia Gas Works, constructed in 1974 and still in service today, two (2) 143,000cu.m. LNG tanks for Distrigas in Staten Island, NY, and three (3) tanks for Enegas in Barcelona, Spain; again, still in service today. In chemical and allied industries, Preload tanks and silos are used extensively for storing liquid and solid chemicals. For the storage of corrosive acid or alkaline solutions, Preload tanks have been lined with protective coatings and utilized successfully. In the petroleum industry, Preload tanks have been used to store crude oil, bunker "C", fuel oil, diesel oil, kerosene, and gasoline. Preload silos have also been employed for the storage of such dry materials as grain, cement, lime, alumina, cryolite, coke, coal, bark, ammonia, sulphate, clay and limestone. Preload, Inc. is a privately held company. Show less
