About Thomas Martens

In reflecting on 23 years as a sales manager for Novartis, I feel that, to a large degree, my success has depended on my ability to get the most out of the people I have worked with. Through training, coaching, and relationship building, I have been able to take experienced sales people, maybe in a rut, and turn them into high performing, goal busting sales professionals. I have found my greatest successes with those individuals who know how to sell, but due to a number of influences have become stagnant in performance. I especially enjoy working in a one to one coaching, or small group setting, teaching skills and with follow-up coaching help embed the new skills as daily practice. This aspect of my career is a passion for me, and something I desire to continue to do in the future.I have led teams of new hires through basic sales skills and product knowledge training, and have been a guest trainer nationally for in-house classes of new hires. I was recognized for bringing sales ideas to a “down to earth”, “real life” level by using actual selling situations to enhance the training concepts. I also enjoyed being part of a team of managers, where we worked together to develop a rollout of a new sales model Novartis was adopting. We tailored the sales strategy to our team’s needs, and presented the strategy to groups of 30-40 sales reps during a regional meeting. I enjoyed working to develop a field coaching report and then a plan for the introduction of this new tool, leading my management team in the use of this new tool. Over my career, I have found that these functions are what I derive the most pleasure from, seeing people achieve the success they desire, and implementing new ideas.
