I have worked in the Kenyan Investment Management industry for over 14 years in various capacities.Investment Operations is a support function - operations professionals support people and deal-flows in the Investment management front office to make sure end to end processes work smoothly.It involves a processing and controlling role, i.e. matching instructions with counterparties, and arranging and monitoring payments, and covers everything from preparing the documentation required to making sure settlements have been effected, and resolve any problems with counterparties if they arise, and review of unsettled trades to ensure timely completion.Also involved is manual intervention when electronic systems fail (which are exceptions), and, devising new ways of making technology systems and operations processes work more efficiently; dealing with any system queries a front office professional might have - everything from reconciliation issues to any discrepancies in Investment reports (Valuation and Performance reports).Managing the operations department is more strategic in nature. Having a holistic view of ALL the process flows of the department and how they are interlinked; ensuring client data integrity, periodic reviews and exploring ways of streamlining the exceptions process, and, working with the team and third parties to determine how to make processes work more efficiently with minimal turn around times.
