Food Courier

Aberdeen And Glasgow, United Kingdom

Delivery of food part-time. Involves hard work and significant effort and patience. It pays per order so has contributed to my work ethic becoming even stronger as the more orders you deliver the more money you make. Has also contributed significantly to my time management skills as I commit to doing a few hours every week during term-time which means that I have less time to study and enjoy any extracurricular activity. In order to make time for everything I must plan ahead and be disciplined. It has also significantly developed my interpersonal skills as I have to interact with numerous new people in every shift. My customer service skills have also been developed as I have to ensure that every customer is satisfied with the level of service that I provide.

Construction Labourer

Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

Labourer on construction sites in Melbourne Australia during a period of 3 years travelling and living abroad. Learned to appreciate the physical effort involved in working as a labourer on construction sites. Was ran by a manager so had to adhere closely to their instructions and was often given a list of tasks to carry out and then trusted to work independently throughout a day completing every task that had been given. I was also often required to work as part of a team with each member relying on the effort and work ethic of the other members in order to complete whatever tasks had been set. Communication skills and listening to the exact instructions given was very important in order to ensure the health and safety of everyone involved. A typical working week in this industry, in Australia, consists of a six-day week and an average 9-hour day so my capacity to work long hours doing demanding work has been developed considerably throughout my employment there. Throughout my time I interacted with people from all over the world from a variety of different cultures. I relished this opportunity and found that I was able to communicate effectively with whoever I met throughout my time at work.

Agricultural Labourer

Gatton, Queensland, Australia

During 2 short breaks from working on construction sites I worked both indoors in food processing facilities and outdoors on food packing equipment carrying out a number of roles but predominantly stacking food for transport. This required a significant amount of physical effort and discipline. The days were long lasting an average of 11 hours. In every role I was working as part of a team including one role in which we were paid by how many pallets of food we as a team were able to process. This evoked a team spirit and communication was essential for our success, safety and ability to earn money. After this I became a much harder worker as it is by far the hardest work that I have ever done. The working day would start very early, at 5am, which required discipline, effort and punctuality.

Bar Staff/Waiter

The Burnside Hotel

Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom

Bar work in a fast-paced environment which required excellent interpersonal skills and effective communication skills. I had to work well as part of a team fulfilling regular functions such as weddings and birthday celebrations often with over 200 guests. Each member of the team worked well together in order to ensure maximum customer satisfaction and enjoyment. It required organisational skills in terms of ensuring that the bar is well stocked throughout the night in order to reduce the amount of time that customers would have to wait to be served. Also making sure that any orders for food had been taken when customers were ready. This was to ensure that they would be served quickly and in order to generate more revenue for the business as any waiting customers could be seated more quickly the more efficiently we operated. Communication skills were an integral part of the role as customers queries and requests had to be listened to and understood in order to ensure their satisfaction and the prospect of repeat business.
