Slewing rings and other roller bearings with a large diameter, such as those used as blade or tower bearings in wind turbines, deform significantly due to the loads that occur during operation. This deformation influences the load distribution in the raceway system and thus its capacity. In addition, it also affects bolt connections as well as the sealing system and therefore the performance of the bearing as a whole.Classic approaches to dimensioning of slewing rings do not take this effect into account, which is why finite element analyses (FEA) are usually used for this. The models that I use for this purpose contain fully modeled rolling elements and are characterized by a particularly realistic representation of the kinematics of the raceway system.
