I ran the astrophysics department’s outreach scheme, looking at the transition between primary and secondary schools in deprived areas. Used astrophysics to inspire students to study science. The project was due to run for two years encompassing multiple visits to each school and tracking the project’s success

University Of Bristol

Supported by a Nuffield research grant, I worked with Dr Stephen Dugdale on a computational physics project, investigating the electronic properties of a low temperature superconductor.This ten week project introduced me to writing plotting programs in Python as well as working with high powered computing facilities, namely Blue Crystal at the Advanced Computing research Centre at the University.As well as the research itself, I got the opportunity to draft a scientific publication of the work we had undertaken.Further to this, I helped to run the International Conference on Positron Annihilation (ICPA) which was being held at the University. My jobs included signing attendees in, ensuring talks were running to time, and providing technical support.

Robert Smyth Academy, Leicestershire

For a second year, I took part in the Ogden Trust Teach Physics scheme, this time in a high school in Market Harborough. I advanced on my previous work by taking charge of more lessons for older students (the school is for year 9 to year 13) as well as leading induction activities for prospective students, gaining both a better insight in teaching methods as well as leadership skills.I also worked hard to create new and innovative teaching methods for a large piece of summer homework for students advanced to A level physics, taking advantage of tried-and-tested homework methods as well as adding a new, more interactive, video element on YouTube.

Rushey Mead School, Leicester

As part of an Ogden Trust scheme, I worked in a secondary school in Leicester, supporting the teaching of Physics within the school by acting as a classroom assistant and creating new learning materials. I also got the opportunity to teach a variety of classes to students ranging from year 7 to year 11.

I started as a Sales Assistant, learning the basics of shop work: interacting with customer, using tills and keeping up stock levels. I was then promoted to Health Care Assistant having passed my HCA course. This meant giving medical advice to customers when possible or realising when more expert advice from the Pharmacist would be required. This greatly improved my communication skills with both the public and with different members of staff: sales assistants, Pharmacy staff and managers.This was mainly a weekend job, allowing me to fit work around my studies.
