The focus of my role as a senior scientist has been to upgrade the company’s mass spectrometry capabilities. I took a leading role in the evaluation and tendering for a new mass spectrometer and now I am heading up the development of a Host Cell Protein workflow. I am also heavily involved in several new product innovation projects one of which I am the lead on. I have also taken on supervisory responsibilities for the yearly sandwich placement students, and I currently manage the mass spectrometry lab. Further to this, I have recently enrolled in on a Level 3 Leadership and management ILM course run by the University of South Wales, at present I have submitted for the award level of this qualification and I am currently working towards the Certificate

My role has been focused on developing novel and improving existing analytical methods to characterise new and current biopharmaceutical products. My organisational and planning skills have enabled me to further several projects simultaneously. In addition to this I have proactively assisted in the purchasing of new analytical equipment and have represented the company at external events such as careers fairs.

My PhD was a joint project across the Departments of Chemical and Biological Engineering and Infection and Immunity at the Medical School under the supervision of Dr Mark Dickman and Prof Robert Read. The aim of my project was to define the global changes in histone post translational modifications with the possibility of identifying a biomarker for the progression of the disease or identifying new therapeutic targets. This has given me a comprehensive view of how the inflammatory process in both arms of the immune system functions. I have also applied these skills to other systems to identify and quantify protein PTMs in other systems.
