Sr. Associate Investigator
Focus on strain physiology as applied to growth, storage stability (solid and liquid formulations) and evolution. Experience with yeast and lactic acid bacteria. Have led Fermentation processes for Biobutanol and probiotic / microbiome projects.• Developed small scale fermentation system, providing higher throughput strain stability testing. Enabled 3x the fermentation capacity and up to 12x throughput for stability testing protocols, saving more than $300,000 compared to similar commercial platform. o Suitable for lactic acid and bifidobacteria o Addition of nitrogen gas flow enabled use with Megasphera strains• Coordinated activities for multiple labs, including fermentation, analytical, and robotics, addressing protocol development o Provided single point of reference to schedule all activities related to an experiment o Allowed other team members to efficiently focus on personal responsibilities• Directed fermentation and data analysis activities related to biobutanol strain physiology o Organized and analyzed experimental data, and provided detailed package to customers and team members • Oversaw evolution of strains using chemostat, resulting in heat tolerant candidates o Provided path to commercial scale storage and shipment• Identified conditions for improvements to commercial processes of probiotic strains o Refined pH setpoint, providing 20% improvement in storage stability o Reduced process time by 2 hours, while maximizing process CFU/mL and survivability of 4 strains• Experience with fed-batch cultures of yeast and various bacteria• SOP development
