The ecology of Mirror is a movie that is live on social media - like Jean-Luc Godard, Ruy Guerra and Jean Rouch's 1977 founding project for Mozambican national television - Mirror is shot during the day, edited in the afternoon and broadcast in the evening - with stills appearing regularly as a silent narrative unfolding through the year. Set to the soundtrack of a conversation between the elements, animals, plants and the characters, Mirror locates itself within the great oral traditions of the earth, part Hamlet, part Odyssey, part Vedas, all Pangaea's pantheons incorporate on the set: Mami Wata, Xango, /Kaggen, Buddha, Bob Marley, Vishnu, Venus and Jesus come out to play in parallel worlds, envious of the intensity which mortality brings to human life. As a film Mirror references Kurosawa’s Rashomon, Mambety’s Touki Bouki, George Greenough's Innermost Limits of Pure Fun and Catto and Bridgeman’s 1 Giant Leap. Mirror gives birth to art works in other media along the way - appearing on the street Banksy-style or showcased in pop-ups, galleries and art fairs in Cape Town and around the world.

An opera about a 12 year old surfer from Arpoador, covering the years before she becomes world champion, loosely based on The Tempest by William Shakespeare, and referencing independence movements in the Americas.

Works include the solar-powered light installation Constant (2009) and a series of ultrachrome canvases Mulcaire painted during the Groundhog (2006-7) and ICEPAC (2008-9) expeditions to Antarctica, an environmental project he produced for the United Nations International Polar Year in 2007-8 and new works such as MINI #1 (2014), a post-modern car (Mini Cooper S) half submerged into the street. The next phase of Mirror from April-July 2014 will link the revolutionary Atlantic through a sea voyage from Cape Town to Rio de Janeiro via Luanda, Lagos, Ghana, Cabo Verde, Senegal, Jamaica, Haiti, Venezuela and Trinidad, retracing the routes along which revolutionary ideas were transmitted across the Atlantic by sailors, slaves, pirates and surfers since 1500. Mulcaire is represented by Galeria Mirim in Cape Town and Lagos. He has taken part in many critically acclaimed international exhibitions including the Bienal de São Paulo, the Biennale of Sydney and Art Basel Unlimited 2008. Mulcaire was the youngest curator in the history of documenta when he was appointed to the Artistic Direction of documenta X in 1995 at the age of 23. Thomas Mulcaire has worked with and collaborated on projects with many of the most important artists, architects, gallerists, filmmakers, curators of our time, including Catherine David, Marian Goodman, Dan Graham, Steve McQueen, Peter Friedl, Richard Hamilton, Jeremy Rose, Liam Gillick, Marine Hugonnier, Ricardo de Oliveira, Philippe Parreno. Within the geopolitics of art, he was the prime mover in Okwui Enwezor’s appointment as curator of the second Johannesburg Biennale and documenta 11. He is regarded by many of his peers as the third best artist in South Africa. Together with Ntsikilelelo Ntshingila, Pol Taylor and Marko Peljhan, Mulcaire established ICEPAC, the first mobile research station in Antarctica to be powered entirely by the sun and wind.
