As the Product Engineering SUT Scrum Master, my top priority is the psychological safety, collaboration, and teamwork of my teams as we navigated the pandemic and post-pandemic worlds. I lead two parallel teams of project engineers through Scrum events, to ensure on-time delivery of commitments and drive continuous improvement of project delivery, efficiency, and cross-functional collaboration. I develop company-wide processes by leveraging the Danaher Business System (DBS) to drive improvements in key operational mechanisms such as change management. I'm also the Chair and Coordinator of the Engineering Change Control Board. I continue to lead and manage projects directly, and support the team hands-on.

On the Life Cycle Engineering team, I lead projects and develop verification/validation test protocols to investigate customer complaints and resolve CAPAs. I deliver risk-based solutions to top-priority projects swiftly using the Agile methodology. The efficiency of my primary role yields me time to serve as the chair of the Employee Forum, a site-wide volunteer perks and events committee seeking to improve the workplace culture. I also lead the R&D Mentoring Program. My favorite aspect of my role is that I work with every one of Cytiva's product lines, which affords me the opportunity to learn about all aspects of the manufacturing process as well as customer applications in cell therapy, bioprocessing, and ATF perfusion.

I made a career pivot from hands-on technical roles into a more literary position in order to capitalize on my strengths in communication and technical writing, as well as minimize my chances of knocking over Erlenmeyer flasks. My responsibilities were to investigate the processes for assembling and QC testing hollow fiber filtration cartridges, and author GMP-compliant work instructions and specifications for a legacy, artisan process. My documentation improved first-pass yield by reducing scrap and rework due to operator error, and improved process data integrity to help GEHC reach the goal of ISO-13485 compliance. In addition, I volunteered on several cross-functional committees to improve the site culture of safety, quality, and cooperation. I participated in the Safety Risk Assessments EHS team as well as the VPP Buzz team, and my efforts helped lead Westborough to become VPP certified in 2018. I also served on the Employee Forum, where I brought in employee perks and coordinated holiday events.

Aphios is a small pharmaceutical research company built around novel applications of supercritical fluids. My focus was on three projects: first, the extraction and isolation of several bioactive cannabinoids from cannabis sativa; second, the encapsulation of hydrophobic drugs in lipid nanosomes; third, the inactivation of HIV. I worked under bio-safety level 2 and 3 (BSL-2 and BSL-3) environments as well as in the GMP-regulated pilot plant. With few full-time employees, we all wore many hats; my responsibilities included conducting experiments, refurbishing and maintaining equipment, and constructing laboratory spaces.

At Dicerna, I worked with some of the brightest medicinal chemists in the field of oligonucleotide chemistry. Our team focused on experimental design of hit improvement experiments for siRNA sequences. My role as a support was in delivery chemistry, providing oligo sets to the biology team for use in in vivo experiments. I provided quality control of CRO-generated oligos using HPLC-SAX (strong anion exchange) and mass spectroscopy. I recorded data using the Biovia electronic notebook platform, and tested the ELN and registration software rigorously to support the bioinformatics team. I also managed the phosphoramidite and oligonucleotide inventories. Though my internship was short, my amidite inventory management system is still in use today.

At Fresenius Medical Care I was a contract documentation coordinator working on change control for the medical device manufacturing group. I managed quality control documentation and standard operating procedures. and ensured that the documentation met ISO9001, ISO13485, and 21CFR regulatory standards. I used the change control software Windchill as well as the SAP inventory management environment.

My research at Penn State was titled Investigation of the Bioactive Profile of Microwave Fried Potato Chips. My objective was to develop a processing method for potato snacks which resulted in a lower level of process-induced toxins as well as a higher retention of the lipophilic micronutrients lost in fryer oil and destroyed at frying temperatures, while maintaining comparable quality attributes to conventionally fried chips. My motivation was to impact the epidemic of chronic inflammation diseases including chron's disease and colon cancer by improving the gut health of Americans. I applied engineering principles of design to the experimental method, metabolomics to data analysis, and planned for a sensory study to validate my quality claim. This might seem a bit too ambitious for a master's degree. It was. I didn't finish. But, I did learn a ton about food chemistry, nutrition, metabolism, and microbiology. The biggest benefits I gained from my time at Penn State were shoring up my knowledge of biology and human physiology, and learning how to conduct research as a scientist (as opposed to as an engineer). Moving forward, not only is my knowledge base stronger in an aspect of life sciences that was previously lacking, but I have a great appreciation for experimental design - and a lot more respect for concise and straightforward experiments.
