I am a Professor of Applied Mathematics at the University of St Andrews, Scotland, with a research focus on the theory of space plasmas, in particular the Sun and the solar system. At St Andrews, I have taught lecture courses in Applied Mathematics at all undergraduate levels since 1997 and have vast experience in supervising summer internships, final year undergraduate projects, MSc dissertations and PhD students.I obtained my undergraduate degree in Physics ("Diplom-Physiker, Grade: Sehr gut") and my PhD in Physics ("Dr. rer. nat., Grade: Sehr gut") from the Ruhr-Universität Bochum, Germany. I continued at Bochum as a PostDoc and then worked for the European Space Agency at ESTEC, Noordwijk, as in ESA Internal Fellow in 1994. After that I went to St Andrews first as a PostDoc, then held a PPARC Advanced Fellowship, during which I was appointed as a permanent member of the academic staff.I have held various administrative roles including Deputy Head of School for 5 years (August 2010 - July 2015) and Head of School for 3 years (August 2015 - July 2018).
