Current
Director Of Quantum Computing
Leading a multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers taking the power of cold atom quantum computing out of the lab to solve customer problems. Cold atom quantum computers have the potential to provide industry-leading performance with qubit counts and connectivity surpassing the competition. As PI on a ColdQuanta-led multi-institution collaboration of industrial, academic, and national lab partners under the DARPA ONISQ program, I look to use cold atom quantum computers to outperform classical approaches on real-world problems.
Group Leader - Quantum Information
Physicist, Quantum Information Systems Lead
Before shifting to focus on quantum computing development, I previously led ColdQuanta’s efforts to develop cold atom and trapped ion enabling technology for more general quantum information science applications. In this capacity, I served as PI on $9M of awarded grants and contracts, including work to miniaturize cryogenic ion-trap vacuum systems now being heralded as a key feature of IonQ's quantum computing scaling roadmap.
Test Engineer
While at BATC, I assisted researchers at the Air Force Research Laboratory by developing novel high-energy-laser metrology systems dedicated to increasing understanding of laser-material interactions. Designed and fabricated a cryostat system for measuring thermal conductivity of optical materials, an apparatus for measuring ppm-scale optical absorptance, and a high-speed, high-resolution, imaging surface profilometer. Held TS/SCI clearance.
Postdoctoral Researcher
Pushed forward lab capabilities toward demonstration of long-range ion-ion remote entanglement, a key resource for enabling quantum networking. Designed a micropositioning system for electrodes in a specialized ion trap.
Research Assistant
Designed, fabricated, tested and maintained apparata for manipulation of single trapped barium ions. Performed experiments requiring precise (nanosecond scale) timing and sequencing of a variety of pulses of laser light and radio waves, including a measurement of a physical constant to ppm accuracy and the generation and verification of quantum entanglement between the electronic state of a single barium ion and the polarization state of a single photon. Supervised several undergraduate research assistants in the production of useful electronics and optical assemblies.
Undergraduate Research Assistant
Ran experiments in nonlinear atom optics which used the presence of a cloud of cold cesium atoms to mediate interaction between pulses of laser light.
Reu Research Assistant
Investigated using hot atomic vapor for manipulation (“squeezing”) of the fundamental quantum noise of laser light.
Undergraduate Research Assistant
Wrote LabVIEW programs for data acquisition and apparatus maintenance procedures. Machined parts and fabricated electronics relevant to soft x-ray spectroscopy.
