Researched underlying material properties of vibrational excitons on the nanoscale with infrared scattering scanning near field optical microscopy (IR s-SNOM) in nanocrystals and self-assembled monolayers under Markus B. Raschke. • Developed nano-crystallographic technique by combining high-resolution IR s-SNOM with vibrational exciton modeling to determine nanoscale local crystallinity and crystalline domain size. Applied to study the growth of nano-aggregates of ruthenium porphyrin carbonyl (RuOEP) under annealing in a polymer matrix.• Pushed the limits of IR s-SNOM sensitivity by measuring and modeling 2D vibrational exciton formation in self-assembled monolayers. • Built an IR s-SNOM experimental setup at National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in a collaboration to test broadband IR frequency comb sources and bring the advantages of Synchrotron Infrared Nano Spectroscopy to tabletop IR s-SNOM.• Extended broadband IR s-SNOM to the hydrogen stretch regime.• Trained 14 individuals to independently perform IR s-SNOM experiments. • Collaborated with industry partners at Bruker/Anasys to provide feedback for the development of commercial IR s-SNOM instruments, and with APE in development of OPO lasers for IR s-SNOM.• Maintained and helped build optical setup for magneto optical trap experiments.• Modeled shockwaves in confined atomic fermi gas clouds though inverse Abel transform with MATLAB and Mathematica.
