I have so many ideas that it's always a challenge deciding where to focus time and energy. When you are self-employed, the key to success is getting behind something that genuinely excites you. That excitement has to keep you fired up to negotiate all the more mundane tasks that come with running your own business.Leaving a successful career of 20 years on Wall Street was a hairy moment, but I would encourage anybody to follow your heart and your passion if the calling is strong enough. Doing so - for me - resulted in discovering new levels of personal reward and fulfilment.

Bob Forrest and Drew Pinsky, both individuals who had helped me with problems related to getting treated for "Bipolar 2" depression, were instrumental in my 2007 decision to launch a chain of sober living homes. I affiliated with Las Encinas Hospital in Pasadena, and attracted a solid team. Suddenly, my Sober Living Homes became the "go-to" houses for VH1's hit show "Celebrity Rehab" for both seasons 1 and 2, starring Bob and Dr. Drew. I handled the "celebrities" who were to join the show while the sets were being prepared, etc. This helped my venture's success, because naturally the show enhanced the popularity of the houses wildly!Running the homes was an invaluable, chaotic experience in my life. Eventually, I moved everything online to SoberLivingSearch.com and established the first national listing of sober living homes. I will always be most proud of this venture, and it influenced where my career would go from there. Close with a dramatic 'bada boom'.

After almost falling into the business by engineering my way into a marketing position with a regional firm, I lucked out by winning a radio show that - before the internet was relied upon - was a pretty huge deal (syndicated). My 'gift of gab' on-air attracted so much business I was able to start my own broker/dealer, and even merge into a public company! All wild stuff for a 29-year-old.After "going corporate" with one of the biggest international firms, my partner Ron Roesler and I were among a handful of advisors who were able to obtain fully discretionary manager's licenses. We were fortunate to have foreseen the retail financial industry headed to fee-based relationships - vs. trade-based commissions.This led to an exciting and rewarding career. As a top producer and after having been appointed to the Director's Council, however, Wall Street had lost its luster and for me, by 2006, it was time for a new challenge!
