As part of the CEANGAL project, which was funded by the Irish government's Department of Foreign Affairs, I had the opportunity to research ways to generate renewable energy for low-income communities in Malawi. My focus was on exploring the potential of biogas production as a source of electricity for households and small-scale farms. Furthermore, I investigated the possibility of utilizing the CHP unit's heat production to provide warmth to households or pre-treat digestate. Although my work was mainly theoretical, I carried out extensive surveys on the best available technology for generating electricity from biomass. I also completed a technical economic analysis and a life cycle analysis, which were later published in a journal.

During my postdoctoral research work, I was part of a French project called Bitume 2.0, which was coordinated by Ademe, the French Institute for Environment and Energy, and Colas. The various tasks were split among different laboratories, including Cea in Grenoble, Ifsttar Nantes, iterg in Bordeaux, and the Institute of Lipids. In my part of the project, I worked in a laboratory called Ceisam at the University of Nantes.Our objective was to produce bio bitumen using different waste products from crops or waste oils. My specific task was to produce biobitumen using hydrothermal liquefaction. To compare the oil with petroleum bitumen, I utilised rheology.

During my contract in New Zealand, I was employed by a small-scale company that operated a hydrothermal reactor. My primary responsibility entailed investigating viable methods of repurposing the waste generated during wool extraction utilizing perchloroethylene. To this end, we subjected the solvent to multiple distillations and subsequently treated the residual trace of the solvent with supercritical water to eliminate the chlorinated solvent. Crucially, we worked in conjunction with AgResearch and wool scour to retrieve lanolin from the washing water utilizing the hydrothermal reactor. This collaborative effort was pivotal to the success of our project.

Throughout my PhD studies, my focus was on creating biopetroleum or biocrude oil through hydrothermal liquefaction of microalgae. I conducted in-depth research on the formation of nitrogen compounds, utilising a small batch reactor and various model compounds like proteins, lipids, and carbohydrates. My primary objective was to gain a better understanding of crude oil formation from microalgae. I also explored the use of catalysts to minimise the creation of nitrogen compounds. This involved modifying several zeolite catalysts and examining their impact on the quality of the crude oil produced. Additionally, I had the opportunity to present my research findings at a number of conferences across Europe, including Sweden, the UK, and France. My hard work paid off when I was awarded 1st prize in a poster presentation competition at the Algal Biotechnology Sheffield Symposium.

The subject of the project was hydrothermal gasification of algae, supervised by Martin Brandenberger and Dr Frederic Vogel. The aim of the project was to investigate how sulphur from different microalgae affects the production of methane and poisons a Ru/C catalyst with sulphur. I used gas chromatography for gaseous analysis and GC-MS regularly. Additionally, I learned various techniques to characterize catalysts.
