About Thomas Roderick

Technology has long been a significant part of my life, along with a love of science. Growing up in the western suburbs of Chicago, I dreamed of working for FermiLab and discovering particles using advanced physics. In high school and college I studied Computer Science and Physics and Astronomy, researching the creation of the Universe and searching for supernova. While my interest and love was deeply rooted in these studies, I also acknowledged that my limitation was mathematics greater than basic Calculus. My later dream of working for CERN crushed, I turned to the arts (though I once applied to be Stephen Hawking’s personal assistant in 1999).The arts and my creative side have always come naturally. Writing, whether creative story-telling, technical writing, or simple communication, is something I am enthusiastic about and which I also consider an expertise of mine. I still hold hope to publish someday. Public speaking is something I rather enjoy, and I love being on stage in large auditoriums, telling stories or sharing wisdom interspersed with wit and anecdote. After years of helping other Universities and developing IT strategy, a future in consulting is not out of the question. But what I love most of all is mentoring my own staff and others: being able to guide someone along their path with insight, and potentially helping someone be the best they can achieve. The exhilaration of seeing someone else succeed is amazing. Otherwise, my personal interests lie in distributed research computing, Formula One racing, Premier League soccer, and deep space exploration. I am passionate about ALS research (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis), and emerging treatments for the disease. I dabble in playing guitar, love music and reading, play soccer once a week and volleyball when I can. I have thought about getting a pilot's license. Someday I would like to travel several parts of the world, and would love to live in Europe at some point in my life. Until then…
