About Thomas Romano

In my role as the Global Sales Director at American Society for Microbiology (ASM), I have a wide range of responsibilities. I lead and develop our Global Partnerships Sales Team, ensuring they have the necessary skills and support to excel in their roles. Recruitment, retention, motivation, training, and coaching are all crucial elements of my work in managing this dynamic team.In addition, ASM will adopt a Subscribe to Open (S2O) model for its six primary research, subscription-based journals in 2025. This aligns with ASM's mission to share its high-impact research with a global audience and accelerate scientific advancement. S2O will convert subscription journals to open access and allow authors at subscribing institutions to make their research open access without paying APCs (article processing charges). Please learn more here: https://journals.asm.org/s2oThus, I am involved in negotiating these complex open access agreements with national and system-wide consortia groups. This requires a combination of strategic thinking, effective communication, and a deep understanding of the needs and priorities of these consortia, corporate, government and university representatives. Building strong relationships with representatives is another key aspect of my role, as I aim to foster mutually beneficial agreements through co-creation that help to shape the future of open access.Partner satisfaction is of utmost importance, so I prioritize thoughtful listening and frequent engagement with our society partners. By understanding their needs and challenges, I can work towards maximizing their satisfaction with our services and offerings. Developing and delivering effective commercial strategies is another significant responsibility, as I strive to achieve our business goals and drive growth in our society partnerships.Overseeing global sales and managing partnership renewals for academic, government, and corporate clients is a crucial part of my role. This involves managing relationships, ensuring a smooth renewal process, and providing exceptional support to our partners.Continuous improvement is a cornerstone of my work. I constantly strive to enhance sales operations by refining policies, streamlining processes, generating valuable insights, and optimizing infrastructures. By doing so, I contribute to the overall success and efficiency of our society.Lastly, I take charge of strategically developing and implementing an effective sales methodology training program to ensure consistent growth and success.
