Senior Software Development Engineer (Amazon Issue Management)Amazon Web Services (Aws) Feb 2022 - PresentSeattle, WaI'm currently the lead engineer for the backend data-store and application of both of Amazon’s internal ticketing and task management systems. Backend systems include both data and application layer APIs, asynchronous processing workflows, and data object storage systems. Notable highlights include:- Designed and led the implementation of end-to-end platform automation using modern infrastructure-as-code approaches with AWS’ CDK framework - aiming to reduce region build deployments from 4 months to 4 weeks.- Designed the data layer’s new authorization model for next-generation document schemas for a new task management product- Reduced platform costs YoY by 20% through data storage and fleet optimizations.- Led the improvement of a migration system that moved 200 million documents and data objects from a legacy SQL database into the existing platform, allowing for earlier deprecation and millions in licensing renewal cost savings.- Improved the platform’s operational posture and availability from an average of 35 weekly incidents to an average of 12 weekly incidents through system tooling reviews and updates and establishing SLA/SLO goals for the platform. -
Software Development Engineer (Aws Maester)Amazon Web Services (Aws) Aug 2020 - Feb 2022Seattle, WaI helped design, build, and maintain the Maester service, a next-generation, highly available, distributed, multi-regional/multi-primary document storage service for use by internal Amazon teams and customer-facing AWS services. Notable highlights include:- Designed and implemented scaling improvements to the service’s processing workflow systems that aimed to improve customer latency during high traffic periods.- Designed and implemented a load testing platform that generated thousands of transactions (read/write/search) per second to test the scalability of the service when under heavy load and identify bottlenecks in the service’s architecture.- Helped design and implement a parent/child document indexing processing layer for Elasticsearch/OpenSearch. This improvement was submitted for trademark. (Patent Pending)- Helped design and implement a dynamic encryption key rotation for datastores (Patent Pending) -
Systems Development Engineer (Aws Kinesis)Amazon Web Services (Aws) Jan 2017 - Aug 2020Seattle, WaI specialized in writing automation software for managing a large-scale, distributed data streaming system. I designed, implemented, and maintained two systems that were critical to the functionality of the Kinesis Data Streams service: an infrastructure automation platform and a data analysis pipeline. Notable highlights include: - Helped design and implement an infrastructure automation platform for Kinesis Data Stream’s data and control plane fleets that could auto-scale per-customer data stream chains on-demand with no human intervention necessary. This platform reduced infrastructure costs in excess of $20 million per year.- Helped design and implement an ETL (extract, transform, load) pipeline that consumed data and metrics from several internal Kinesis systems that provided product and engineering insights around infrastructure-to-customer usage relationships. - Designed and implemented an infrastructure platform automation framework for creating, configuring, and deploying load balancers across a large frontend fleet. -
Systems EngineerSolers Feb 2015 - Jan 2017Arlington, VaMy team was tasked with bringing ONI modern software engineering practices. This includes the implementation and training of ONI developers in modern Agile development cycles and the use of development tools such as Jira, Confluence, Git, and Jenkins. Additionally, I developed solutions for ONI engineers to quickly write and deploy their code through the use of Docker containers. Using these containers enabled developers at ONI to not only quickly develop and test their code on a pre-built platform but also allowed them to quickly accredit these environments per DISA and U.S. government compliance.I have been able to successfully “containerize” several development environments which include WebLogic, MongoDB, PostgreSQL, and Apache Spark compute clusters. Each of these container images were thoughtfully designed to be compliant with DoD STIG security standards. In addition to creating build images of the aforementioned containers, I also worked closely with other engineers on my team in designing and creating a system that could be used to quickly and efficiently run security and package updates to our Docker images, test their viability after update, and push to an ONI central repository for their developer use. Other Projects: Enterprise Messaging for DISAOur team was tasked with the support and maintenance of the Enterprise Messaging application system used by several key groups within the DoD. I was specifically responsible for redesigning and rebuilding our internal testing platform for testing and accrediting our software updates to EM. This testing environment was built using a combination of Vagrant and Ansible for the quick deployment of EM clusters, their software packages, and some basic application configuration. This system greatly reduced our teams time to effectively test software updates for EM prior to sandbox and production deployments. -
Systems EngineerTspi Oct 2013 - Feb 2015Reston, VaI served as the team-lead of the support and engineering team within the Healthcare IT division. I've worked on several key projects for the division which include: MicroCloud, a PaaS hosting platform geared towards EHR (electronic health records) hosting for small and medium sized clinics. I helped the team develop a stable platform based on Linux (mostly Ubuntu, but some CentOS and Red Hat) and Windows Server 2012 R2, both using a type-2 hypervisor for virtual machine hosting of EMR and image management applications. I also helped to develop a flexible standard configuration for the company's network service offering. These network configurations allow for various key network services such as IPsec VPNs, VLANs, and ACLs and serve to reinforce HIPAA compliance at a network level. I was heavily involved in the design, configuration, and deployment of both of the division's co-located data centers, implementing network and infrastructure design that utilizes things such as VLANs, ACLs, STP, IPSec VPNs, QoS, and iSCSI networks again for hosting EMR, practice management, and image management applications for various large clinics around the U.S. I also worked on developing automation and network monitoring tools to help the infrastructure run more efficiently and ultimately, more cost-effective. These tools are varied and include everything from Bash and Python scripts to third-party application stacks. In addition to my work on the above projects, my day-to-day duties also included: • Serving as tier 3 escalation point for all major issues and problems.• Organizing and planning all maintenance windows for entire infrastructure, including each data center; also responsible for any configuration/design changes in all environments.• Creating documentation (network/engineering diagrams) for various systems and environments in which company systems are deployed. -
Systems AdministratorTspi Sep 2012 - Oct 2013Reston, VaDuring my time as one of the division's system administrators, I supported over 1000 users across 40 different remote locations, including a single data center location. My support and engineering duties included: serving as tier 2 and tier 3 escalation points for all server (Linux and Windows) and network issues; primary administrator of internal Exchange and Office365 systems; primary administrator of data backup systems (both internal and customer); part of the team that helped create a custom Bash script to automate all backup and HA tasks; served as primary network administrator, configured routers, firewalls, and switches. I was also responsible for deploying a central management system for managing a fleet of access points deployed at a large number of remote sites across the U.S. -
It Support Specialist IiNational Institute Of Allergy And Infectious Diseases (Niaid) Jun 2012 - Sep 2012Bethesda, MdI was part of a team that was responsible for the administration of desktop systems in several of the research labs at NIH's main campus in Bethesda, MD. Desktop administration and general IT duties included: User account administration within AD; system encryption and security administration; general printer and scanner troubleshooting; general PC and desktop system maintenance and repair; -
Latin InstructorVirginia Beach City Public Schools Jun 2009 - Jun 2012Virginia Beach, VaI was responsible for the entire Latin program at Frank W. Cox High School in Virginia Beach, VA. I taught Latin grammar, literature, and Roman history at grade levels 8 through 12. The courses I taught included Latin 1-5, AP Latin Literature and AP Latin: Vergil. I also organized several after-school groups and activities that promoted the subject and encouraged interest among the student body which included Latin Club, Greek Club, and a Classics Club. I was credited with the expansion of the Latin program's membership from 90 students to over 170 by the end of my tenure with the school.
