Thomas Nowack obtained his undergraduate degree in Functional Materials Technology at the University of Würzburg (Germany) in 2015, providing a broad scientific background spanning between chemistry and physics with strong emphasis on related engineering disciplines, nanotechnology and electronics. For his Bachelor’s thesis, the field of organic electronics caught his interest due to its interdisciplinary approach to tailor a material’s (opto-)electric properties towards its intended application by molecular (nano-)engineering.He consequently joined the international Master’s program Organic and Molecular Electronics at the TU Dresden. The program deepened background and interest in Micro-/Nanotechnology, semiconductor technology, molecular physics and especially in (opto-)electronics. For his Master’s thesis, he joined IMEC as international scholar of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven to work on the process-integration of organic thin-film transistors via photolithographic patterning. His major achievement was the demonstration of integrated organic circuits, enabled by the development and optimisation of a procedure to pattern the fragile organic layers with high precision and notably without noticeable performance degradation, which lead to his first co-authored publication.For his doctoral research, Thomas joined the University of Glasgow as Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellow within the EU’s Horizon 2020 project ‘TeraApps’. His work aims to advance terahertz imaging towards its high-profile applications in non-destructive testing, imaging and sensing by means of tailored metasurface optic. This entails the full workflow from optical design considerations, simulative optimisation and upscaling to large-area metasurfaces, as well as manufacturing techniques including quality assurance and finally optical testing within imaging experiments. His experimental results are in excellent agreement with their intended operation and currently prepared for publication.The major achievement of his Ph.D. is the demonstration of compact and efficient THz imaging systems based on one single beam forming and/or beam analysing metasurface. His prototype is capable of retrieving a rich set of important sample information by intelligent utilisation of polarisation effects.Consequently, Mr. Nowack is particularly experienced in the design and development of tailored metamaterials, as well as their production and integration into advanced optical/optoelectronic devices. He finished his PhD in January 2023.
